Six ways to put a chill on rising heating bills

If high heating bills are shocking you, it’s time to take steps to cut this year’s heating bills.
As a Tempstar® dealer, there are a number of steps we recommend to help you cut your energy consumption and hold down your heating bills:
1. Check your ducts. Ask us to examine your duct system. Leaky ducts let your hard-earned energy dollars slip away.
2. Block out cold air. Add caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows. If you can see daylight around a window or door, you have a serious air leak.
3. Re-evaluate your insulation. Even if you think your home is well insulated, heat may be escaping around attic doors, water pipes, through attic vents or other openings. Make sure these areas are sealed and insulated, too.
4. Call for a system check-up. Before that first cold morning arrives, call us to check your furnace and make sure it is operating at top efficiency.
5. Save while you snooze. Ask us about installing a programmable thermostat. It saves you money by lowering the temperature while you sleep and raising it just before you wake up. Programming your thermostat will also allow your system to run at a lower temperature while you are at work but warm your home before you return.
6. Consider an ultra-high-efficiency furnace. If you are in the market for a new furnace, ask us about an ultra-high-efficiency gas furnace such as the Tempstar SmartComfort™ line of 90%+ efficient gas furnaces. With annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings above 90%, these furnaces can wring more than 90% of the heat out of every cubic foot of natural gas.

You don’t have to be cold this winter!

Is it possible to keep air temperatures even throughout the house? Try these ideas for controlling the airflow in your home:
• Check downstairs registers—Make sure all downstairs registers are fully open and not blocked by furniture, throw rugs or other objects.
• Open draperies during the day—South-facing windows can allow sunlight to add heat to your home during the day.
• Choose a two-stage furnace—These furnaces also incorporate a two-stage ignition system to give you just the right amount of heating power to provide you with maximum comfort. They operate on a lower heating output setting most of the time, then power up to full capacity when the weather turns really cold. The result is smoother, more even heating throughout your home. We recommend the Tempstar SmartComfort™ gas furnaces.
• Step up to a variable-speed furnace—A few top-of-the-line gas furnaces use a high-efficiency variable-speed blower motor to keep air moving quietly and continuously through the house to eliminate hot spots and cold spots. We recommend the Tempstar SmartComfort™ VS 90.
• Choose a direct-vent furnace—Many high-efficiency gas furnaces use outside air for combustion. This means they will not pull warm air from inside the house to help burn gas. When a furnace pulls combustion air from inside the house, that warm air has to be replaced by cold air that seeps in around windows and under doors. The Tempstar line includes a variety of direct-vent furnaces to meet the needs of any home and budget.
• Turn the fan on—Even if you don’t have one of these top-of-the-line furnaces, it will cost just a few dollars a month to keep your central heating system fan running all the time. This will keep air moving in your house to prevent the coldest air from collecting on the floor downstairs.
If these adjustments don’t solve your problem, you may need professional assistance. Call us. One of our qualified service technicians may be able to adjust your airflow or improve the operation of your system to even out the air temperatures in your home
